There are definitive works in certain fields that online guides and HOWTOs cannot even approach in terms of detail or quality. It's a class of books that are so familiar people refer to them by nicknames instead of by full title. Books like K&R, The Dinosaur Book, Knuth's never-ending story, The White Book, P&H, The Illustrated's. The Rainbow series. Everyone one of these books are must reads. Buy, beg, borrow or steal, because they will open your mind.
Algorithms and Theory- Introduction To Algorithms (The White Book) - Multiplication is just adding alot right? So does a computer do multiplications by simply looping additions? The MIT Algorithms book explains in detail (and backs up with formal proofs) how computers actually do things like searching, sorting, math operations, and cryptography. A must to have a real understanding of what goes on under the hood besides transistors firing. One of the authors is Dr. Richard Rivest, the R in RSA.
- TCP/IP Illustrated Series (The Illustrated's) - W. Richard Stevens was one of the finest technical writers ever. Period. His books are very imformative, with a deep Unix rooting. Everything from Kerebos to ARP and everything in between, his TCP/IP Illustrated Series is a staple in any professional's library.
